Sustainable Village Project
(Group or Individual Projects)

Grade Level: 9-12

Overview: Students will assess the environmental conditions of a remote Village. The students are Environmental Planners and have a budget of 1.0 Units to plan a long-term sustainable future for this village; They must make changes to the village and educate the villagers of their decisions (by writing a paper and creating a new map of the village).

Water Conservation and Desert Landscaping
(Individual or Group Project)

Grade Level: 10-12

Overview: Some geometry (calculating areas) is required. students are Landscape Architects and they have been hired to create landscape design plans to replace high-water-use grass lawns with water efficient desert plants. Students will draw their landscape designs on a large posterboard and include a colored key. Students must research desert-adapted and native plants for their designs. Students will conclude the project by calculating how much water they saved their client by converting their yard from grass lawn to desert xeriscape.

Urban Planning Project
teamwork + team presentations + class activity

Grade Level: 7-12

Overview: Student teams will make plans for restoring downtown Summerville. Groups from the local community, such as the teacher's association, business association, and the local police department all have different ideas on how the urban planning teams should spend the budget. Student teams will create plans to improve the quality of life of local residents, "green" down town, and to promote economic growth and to stimulate business in the downtown area. The proposed changes can be displayed on a large poster board drawing of the city map. Each team will present their plan to the voters. Each student will take on the role of a community voter. All together, the voters will decide which team's plan will get the city's bid. Students have a limited budget.

Kenya Park Management Project

Overview: Students will come up with a long-term plan to balance the needs of preserving biodiversity and improving living conditions of residents of a national park in Kenya. The focus of the park is to protect the endangered Sitatunga antelope and its habitat. The students are Park Managers and have a budget of 1.0 units to plan a long-term sustainable future for the park. Groups must write a paper explaining their proposed plan and create a map of the park with their proposed changes in place.
